Editor's pick: 10 YouTube channels about sailing

The popularity of sailing and cruising is thankfully on the rise in recent years and something that many dream of experiencing. Whether it's a day on the water or cruising, the freedom and adventure of sailing is something that appeals to many... And with good reason, if you ask us! :)

If you're interested in learning more about sailing, or just want to see how the life can also be lived, YouTube is a great resource. There are countless channels dedicated to sailing, and many of them are extremely popular. Here are the editor's top 10 YouTube channels related to sailing and cruising:

1. Sailing Uma:
Sailing Uma is a popular YouTube channel that documents the journey of a young couple, Dan and Kika, as they sail around the world. The first video was released in 2015 and since then Dan and Kika have shared their adventures with their over 400,000 subscribers.

Dan and Kika's journey began when they decided to sell everything they owned and set off on a sailing adventure. They bought a 35-foot Jeanneau and named it "Uma". That's where their journey began and it's all documented on video.
They have also chosen to go all-in on electricity, which makes the channel particularly interesting for those who want to know more about electricity as a means of propulsion on a boat.
If you're looking for a sailing channel that offers a real and authentic perspective, Sailing Uma is definitely worth checking out.

2. Sailing Yacht Florence:
Florence is the name of Matt and Amy's sailboat, a 1985 Oyster Heritage 37, and through their YouTube channel they document their epic journey around the world. They are skilled, dedicated sailors from the UK, and at the time of writing are close to completing their circumnavigation.

Matt and Amy share their knowledge and experience with their viewers, giving tips and tricks on everything from navigation to maintaining a sailboat.

Sailing Yacht Florence is one of my top favorites and is for anyone interested in sailing and adventure. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just starting out, the canal offers a wealth of information and inspiration for anyone interested in exploring the open water.

3. Erik Anderaa - No Bullshit, Just Sailing:
As the name suggests, the channel is all about sailing and adventure, with a focus on sailing some of the same routes that the Vikings sailed in the old days.
Erik is a 39-year-old solo sailor from Norway who loves sailing in cold, tough conditions. Often with lots of wind. The YouTube channel has grown in popularity and at the time of writing has almost 200,000 subscribers.
Erik's video quality is of high caliber and he takes amazing drone shots of the places he visits along the way. If you're interested in sailing and adventures around Norway, Shetland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland, then "No Bullshit, Just Sailing" a YouTube channel you need to watch.

4. Adventures of an old Seadog:
Bary Perrins is an older gentleman from the UK and has the YouTube channel "Adventures of an old Seadog".
He's documenting his journey around the world in amateur style (he's not done yet). Bary's videos are filmed from the very beginning. From the moment he sets off from England to Portugal to buy the sailboat "White Shadow", a 36-foot Van de Stadt steel boat, to his current location near Fiji.
Bary shares his experiences as they are - both the good and the bad - which is probably why he has managed to maintain his popularity over the years. Adventures of an old Seadog is both authentic and honest without too much clickbait and over-dramatization, which many of the younger Youtubers' content unfortunately suffers from.

By the way, he sails solo and especially loves music, pizza and beer.... What's not to like?
"Adventures of an old Seadog" is a cozy YouTube channel that belongs on the top 10 list.

5. Sailing SV Delos:
The crew of SV Delos are among the first sailors on YouTube to start documenting their journey around the world by sailboat. They started in 2009 and have been at it ever since. That's why this channel is packed with videos that will keep you entertained for countless hours in front of the TV.

The sailboat Delos is a 53-foot French Amel Super Maramu and the main crew consists of Brian from the USA, his wife Karin from Sweden and their daughter Sierra. In addition, they often sail with Brian's brother Brady and many other crew members who come and go.

Overall, Sailing SV Delos is an entertaining YouTube channel, whether you're an experienced sailor or just want to get a taste of the dream of a life on the water.

6. Sailing Magic Carpet:
Aladino and Maya sail in the boat "Magic Carpet", a Swedish classic, a Vindö 32 (28 feet). Aladino is a professional boat builder and has carried out a complete restoration of Magic Carpet - from shipwreck to gem - which is documented on their YouTube channel.

They started their journey in the Mediterranean and the European canals, after which they headed to Sweden, via Denmark. The channel also contains a couple of episodes where they visit Denmark.
Sailing Magic Carpet aims to sail around the world as slowly as possible, and so far they have also managed to maintain a very calm and relaxed atmosphere in their videos.

7. Patrick Lane:
Patrick Lane is a retired fighter pilot from the USA and lives in La Rochelle, France. He has very little experience in video content creation and editing compared to many other YouTube channels. many other YouTube channels, but in my opinion he still manages to make very interesting videos about sailing.

He always sails solo and most of his sailing takes place in the vast Atlantic Ocean and along the west coast of France. If you're a Bavaria sailor, this YouTube channel is particularly interesting, as the first half of all Patrick's videos are filmed on his Bavaria 40 Cruiser. Since then he has changed boat models to the Bongo 8.70 from 2009 and now an RM 890+.

8. Ran Sailing:
The Ran crew is Swedish couple Malin and Johan, along with their young daughter, Vera. They have video-documented more than 30,000 nautical miles in 27 countries, but are now back on a farm in Sweden where they are building their own boat "Ran III" from scratch. Their old sailboat was the beautiful Swedish-built Najad 440 from 1988.
Many of the 30,000 nautical miles include sailing in the western Swedish archipelago, the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

9. Sailing La Vagabonde:
One of the most popular sailing YouTube channels is "Sailing La Vagabonde" with more than 1.8 million subscribers.
Australian couple Elayna and Riley have sailed more than 90,000 nautical miles around the world.

The first "La Vagabonde" sailboat was the French-built Catamaran Beneteau Cyclades 43.4, but they are currently building a brand new Carbon trimaran Rapid 60 in Vietnam.
You can watch sailing from destinations including the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean and Arctic.

10. Sailing Bacchus Home:
This channel doesn't have a huge following and also has a limited number of videos. They haven't released anything sailing-related in the last year (watch the videos and you'll see why), but they tell a nice and authentic story about a New Zealand couple, Asher and Dani, living in London, who buy a 36-foot Beneteau Oceanis and use it as transportation all the way home to New Zealand.

These are just a few of the best YouTube channels related to sailing and cruising. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just starting out, these channels offer a wealth of information and inspiration for anyone interested in sailing and a different life on the water.
